How does the verification work to determine whether my internet router is responsible for blocking the connection of Wi-Fi devices?

Summary:

This article explains how to check whether your internet router is causing the connection problem with your Wi-Fi device.

Introduction:

To check whether your internet access point is preventing your Wi-Fi device from pairing, perform a cross-test. You will need a second phone or a second tablet.

Identify the 2.4 GHz SSID(1) and password(3) of your main internet access point(6), then unplug it.

Enable mobile hotspot(4) (router mode(5)) on the second phone, using the same SSID and password as your main internet access point. (Warning: Make sure the broadcast uses the 2.4 GHz band.)

Reset your Wi-Fi device, then install it using the other phone or tablet with the Enki app open.

(1) SSID: Name of your Wi-Fi network. Several may be broadcast by your internet access point.

(2) 2.4 GHz: Wi-Fi broadcast frequency. Each SSID broadcasts one or more frequencies (2.4, 5, 6, or 7 GHz). We recommend having only one frequency per SSID.

(3) Password: Your router’s security key, often shown on a sticker or screen.

(4) Mobile hotspot: A phone feature that turns it into a router using mobile data (4G/5G), allowing other devices to connect to Wi-Fi.

(5) Router: Device that broadcasts internet, usually your internet router.

(6) Main internet access point: Router that receives the connection from the provider and broadcasts it throughout the home.

Configuring your Wi-Fi access point on your smartphone:

For example, my main internet access point has the following information:

  • SSID: SFR-8fc8
  • Wi-Fi password: Dn36kLm8ws3N

I unplug the power supply from my main access point to turn off its network and take it out of service.

I configure the phone as a mobile hotspot using my internet router’s information so that it can replace it.

If you use an Android phone, the appearance and available options may vary depending on the brand and model because of manufacturer overlays. However, the process remains similar. If you experience a problem, contact your phone brand’s technical support.

Android: iOS:

  1. Open your phone’s Settings.

  2. Go to Connection & sharing or Mobile hotspot.

  3. Select Mobile Wi-Fi hotspot.

  4. Tap Configure hotspot.

  5. Enter the SSID and password for the router, for example:
    Flèche Enki 20px.png SSID: SFR-8fc8
    Flèche Enki 20px.png Wi-Fi password: Dn36kLm8ws3N

  6. Make sure the security is set to WPA2.

  7. Check that the band is set to 2.4 GHz.

  8. Save the changes.

  9. Enable the mobile Wi-Fi hotspot.

  1. Open your phone’s Settings.

  2. Configure the network SSID to match your router’s:

    1. Go to General.

    2. Then go to About.

    3. Change the Name field to your router’s SSID (SSID: SFR-8fc8).

    4. Return to General, then go to Settings.

  3. Go to Personal Hotspot.

  4. Enter the router’s Wi-Fi password (Wi-Fi password: Dn36kLm8ws3N).

  5. Enable Allow Others to Join to share the network.

  6. Finally, enable Maximize Compatibility.

On iOS, it is crucial to enable the "Maximize Compatibility" toggle because iPhones broadcast Wi-Fi using WPA2/WPA3 by default, which is not compatible with our Wi-Fi devices. Enabling this toggle changes the encryption to WPA2, ensuring the connection.

(7) Wi-Fi security encryption: Method that protects the data exchanged between your device and your internet router.

Once these steps are complete, if your settings are correct and identical to those of your internet router, your other phone or tablet will automatically connect to the Wi-Fi network as if it were your router. You do not need to do anything.

If your phone does not reconnect automatically, go to its Wi-Fi settings and connect to your mobile hotspot’s network.

If a password is requested, this means that the information entered does not match the information for the internet router. Restart the router, check the Wi-Fi information, and then repeat the steps.

I recommend resetting your Wi-Fi device to its factory settings. To find out how, see the product page in our FAQ: Enki-compatible devices.

After resetting, you can pair the device again.

1 - Open the Enki app using the "" icon on your phone.

2 - Click "" in the upper-right corner.

3 - Select "Add a device".

4 - Choose the type,

5 - then the brand,

6 - and finally the device model.

7 - Follow the instructions to complete the installation.

Notes:

Once the device is paired, turn off the mobile hotspot and turn your main access point back on. The device will reconnect automatically using the same SSID and password.

Two behaviors may occur when you turn your mobile Wi-Fi access point off and then back on. Wait until the internet router has fully restarted and is operational to observe them.

Behavior no. 1: Behavior no. 2:
  • The device successfully reconnected to your Wi-Fi network.
Flèche Enki 20px.png The pairing problem is caused by your internet access point’s configuration. Check its settings or ask a relative, administrator, or your provider for help. (This problem is not related to Enki.)
  • The device does not reconnect to your Wi-Fi:
Flèche Enki 20px.png Restart the device by disconnecting and reconnecting its power; it should reconnect. Otherwise, proceed to the next step.
